How Close Can You Shoot Steel Targets?

Like caliber, thickness and condition of the steel, and type of bullet, distance is key to shooting steel targets. The larger the caliber the further away one needs to be. The thicker the target, the closer one can be. The softer the bullet the closer one can be.

Minimum Safe Distance Shooting Steel Targets

Assuming the correct caliber and softer ammo is being used, ¼ inch thick targets over 25 yards is recommended. For ⅜ – ½  inch thick targets, 100 yards or more is recommended.

General Distance

It is recommended to be a least 25 yards away from your steel target for handguns and shotguns and at least 100 yards away for rifles.

Handguns: 25 yards or more for handguns

To be on the safe side for pistols, 25 yards plus on a proper steel target set up. People do often shoot closer than recommended and run into splash back issues. A quality target in good condition that is reactive will reduce the shrapnel coming back.

Rifles: 100 yards or more for rifles

To be on the safe side for rifles, a 100 yards or more on a proper steel target set up. People do shoot closer than recommendations and run into catching splatter splash back issues. A quality target in good condition that is reactive will reduce the shrapnel coming back.   

Shotguns: 25 yards or more for shotguns.  

To be on the safe side for shotguns, 25 yards plus on on a proper steel target set up.People do shoot closer than recommendations and run into catching splatter splash back issues. A quality target in good condition that is reactive will reduce the shrapnel coming back.   

How Close Can You Shoot Steel With 5.56?

For 5.56 ammo (FMJ or Ball) 100 yards plus is recommended, for typical steel targets. If the target is reactive with swing or auto reset spring action, closer shots can be made safely.  Meaning the target will absorb some of the force, safely deflecting the round splatter down.  High precaution must be taken when taking closer shots, the less the distance the higher the chance of splash back and damage to the target. In any occasion, safety equipment must be used. Eye and ear protection. Long pants, long shirts, and closed toed shoes.
